So what is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness which we all access on a day to day basis, it is sometime referred to as Trance. SAIH defines it as an education communication process that allows a person conscious and unconscious to believe the same message.
The term Hypnosis was originally developed by the surgeon James Braid and means “nervous sleep”.
That is a standard version.
There is a lot of controversy in academic circles as to what hypnosis really is and whether is actually exists at all.
State Versus non State Theorists
There seem to be two major camps in this regard; those who believe that hypnosis is a special state of altered state of consciousness or trance that subjects enter into.
The other group the none state theorists who believe that the expectation to be hypnotised and social strata are more important (Kirsch and Council, 1989).
State can be amplified by the expectation, attitudes and social pressures of the person being hypnotised.
One of the fundamental aspects of the debate is the question as to whether subjects who are not suggestible can be made suggestible. The state theorists do not believe this to be possible as they do not hold that suggestibility is a skill that can be learned but is rather an inherent capacity which although varies from person to person does not change in any one person over their lifetime.( Adolfo Cangas Díaz and Marino Pérez Alvarez, 1998).
The none state theorists have demonstrated modifications of suggestibility,(Gorassini and Spanos,1986; Sach and Anderson, 1967). Albeit in a somewhat dubious manner.
The debate rages and even popular stars such as Derren Brown have entered the debate to voice their opinion. In his book Tricks of the mind Brown seems to lean towards the none state point of view.
